If you have unwanted hair and are thinking of ways to remove it, serious consideration should be given to laser hair removal treatments. When hair is removed with lasers, it may not regrow. Laser hair removal will permanently reduce your body hair and give you perfectly smooth skin for months. Even when some hair grows back, it will be minimal. Before you start with a series of laser hair removal treatments, there are some things you should know to make sure you are prepared.
How it Works
A concentrated beam of light is focused on the pigment of your hair follicles. With lighter skin types the hair follicle is destroyed in this way, for darker skins the laser is attracted to the blood supply of the hair follicle which destroys the follicle. Once the follicle has been destroyed, it may no longer grow hair. In some cases, thin pale hair may regrow. If this happens, you may have a touch-up treatment at your convenience and not wait for the hair to grow back fully as you do with waxing.
How to Prepare for Your Treatment:
- Avoid sun exposure – for the best results, you should avoid sun exposure, tanning beds and tanning creams at the treatment area for at least two weeks before your appointment. This is one reason we often recommend laser hair removal be performed during the winter when you normally wear more clothing.
- Don’t wax, pluck or have electrolysis for six weeks before your treatment date – these hair removal methods may temporarily remove the follicle, which is needed for laser hair removal. Shaving is fine because it doesn’t affect the follicle. In fact, we may ask you to shave or trim the treatment area the day before the treatment.
- Completely natural – on the day of your treatment make sure you don’t apply any lotion or moisturizing cream on your face, legs or arms and don’t apply deodorant if you are having your underarms treated. This also applies for 24 hours after the treatment as well.
What to Expect
When you have a consultation with our specialist, you may be asked about your medical history and any previous laser hair removal treatments. It is important to tell the doctor if you are taking any prescription medication.
Our specialist and trained technicians will discuss the outcome you can expect after the laser hair removal treatments. It may take two to six treatments to achieve the smooth skin you desire. This is because hair grows in stages and the laser only works during the growth stage.
Our specialist will recommend skin care products for you to use after the treatment. You may be able to wear makeup the next day but should stay out of the sun for at least 48 hours. You may also avoid hot baths and strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
